What is Botox®?

Botox® is a drug produced from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Botox also known as Botulinum Toxin Type – A is produced by Allergan Corp., Irvine, California. Botox is a registered trade mark of Allergan Corp. Botox® is also approved to treat excessive sweating in the underarms, and to reduce the severity of migraine headaches.

Today Botox® cosmetic treatments are taken by millions of people world – wide. Botox® is usually administered by dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and aesthetic medical clinics.

Where and how is Botox® Injected?

Typical patients receive treatments in three to four areas with injections in the “crow’s feet” area, deep horizontal lines on the forehead, lines between the eyes, and smile lines on the nose.

Botox® injection treatments require no sedation and with the aid of numbing – cream and ice applied to the areas prior to being injected patients experience only minimal discomfort.

Botox® is injected using a very fine 31 gauge needle. After every 4 -5 injections the needle is changed to maximize patient comfort.

Typical treatments take 15 – 20 minutes maximum.

What brands of Botox® are available and how is it priced?

Today there are many quality generic brands of Botox® available on the market, some of them are Xeomin produced in Germany, Dysport produced in England, and Neuronox – Siax produced in South Korea.

Botox® typically comes in 100 IU vials and clinics charge for treatments by the number of IU’s injected for the total treatment. There is no fixed price for a treatment as all patients have unique needs, some require more IU’s than others. Middle aged people who desire all 4 areas to be treated will require a minimum of 50 IU’s. However, the amount will vary in accordance with the patients unique needs.

Botox® prices should always be quoted by the IU, any other method can be misleading and possibly unethical.

What are the side effects of Botox® and recommended protocol after treatments?

Botox® injection side effects are minimal, usually extremely small diameter bruise marks from the needle that fade away in a few days.

Patients can resume their normal routine after the treatments.

When will I see the results of the Botox® treatments and how long do they last?

Patients will see the results from the treatments in 4 – 7 days.

Patients can expect the treatment enhancements to last 3 – 6 months depending on their metabolism and the depth of the wrinkles being treated.

Our medical staff continually attend seminars and workshops keeping up to date on the latest updates in Botox® and aesthetic medicine.

What are Facial or Dermal Fillers?

Facial or Dermal Fillers are comprised of a gel based hyaluronic acid used to fill in wrinkles and folds that appear on the face with age.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that is in most of the cells of our body. In the skin cells hyaluronic acids function is to provide nourishment and hydration to the collagen in the skin cells. Collagen keeps our skin firm and supple.

As we age hyaluronic acid concentrations decline in our skin cells which leads to a decline in collagen levels. These declines manifest themselves in sagging skin and the formation of wrinkles and folds in the skin.

Hyaluronic acid injections are the most popular type of filler used in aesthetic medicine.

How and where are Facial Fillers applied?

Facial Filler is applied using a fine 27 gauge needle. Numbing cream is applied to the areas to be treated prior to injection. The filler is typically injected in the nasal labial folds that run from the side of nose to the lips. Other popular areas to treat are vertical lines and folds on the face and to enhance the appearance of the lips. After the injections the areas that were treated are gently massaged.

The type of filler used is based on how profound the wrinkles or fold is.

At the Costa Rica Anti Aging Aesthetic clinic we use the brand Perfectha Deep Lines and Ultra Deep lines produced in France and also Tesyal produced in Switzerland.

Facial filler injections will maintain their integrity from 4 months to a year depending on the area of treatment and the volume of the area being treated.

Facial Filler treatments are usually quoted by the cc and the cost depends on how many cc’s are required to treat the areas specified by the patient.
